HELLYEAH turn it up for Spokane!

Their favorite city to play in!

Sorry San Antonio, Chad made it very clear that Spokane is his favorite city to play. But he did say that you guys were in the running for a long time. So you can fuckin bet Ill be seeing the Hellyeah boys in San Antonio in the future! That being said, if you’ve never seen them in Spokane, you should make it happen. I can attest to the awesomeness of these shows because Ive been to em all!

As far as this show goes, let me just start by saying that THIS IS THE SHOW IVE BEEN WAITING FOR! Hellyeah havent always been the easiest pill to swallow. But they keep coming around and I keep showing up to support them. Ive always had a good time and been proud of what they’re doin but lately its starting to feel like home again. With new additions to the band things are really falling into place. The energy on stage was undeniable. The riffs are heavy and I can feel the bass in my soul… and that Mudvayne scream! COME ON! So Im definitely digging the live show!

Backing that shit up is their new record, Blood For Blood! Im ashamed to say I had not given it a shot prior to the show… but it rules! I almost wish I had heard it before but maybe I wouldn’t have felt it the same way I am feeling it now. Connecting to it in person, organically, strait from the musicians in front of me… Fucking LIVE music!

They’re raising the bar! Thats even a lyric on the album, and its no joke. Chads back and he’s got some of the best players backing him! So lets just say I cannot fucking wait for the next record. All 5 guys in the studio together. I have a feeling its gonna be sooner than later!

What else can I say!?! Get to this tour, BUY Blood For Blood, and never underestimate The Negative Fucking One.

Chad Gray & Kyle Sanders, Hellyeah, 02.10.15, Knitting Factory, Spokane, WA.

Its very rare that Im so stoked on a set list that is loaded with new songs! It also didn’t hurt that most the other songs were from their debut album. Highlights of the night for me were Cross To Bier, DMF, Demons In The Dirt, and BLood For Blood! All new songs! Im fuckin tellin you!!! This shit jams. I need another fix!

Mastodon tour kick off!

The almighty Mastodon kick off their spring tour with Gojira and Kvelertak right here in Seattle. And with a new record right around the corner they promise to be back sooner rather than later… for the two hundred and forty thousandth time, according to “Middle Man” Troy Sanders. Mastodon originally had a dedicated vocalist when they first started in early 2000. Nowadays vocal duties are split between members and maybe thats why they are able to pull off such an epic set list. Monday nights set list spanned much of their library. With over half the set coming off of their first 3 records, I was a happy kid! The guys really do know what they’re doing too. They threw in a few tracks off of the more recent Crack The Skye and The Hunter. But not to overdue it, considering they have been touring heavily on those records for the past 5 years.

They also debuted 2 new live songs off their highly anticipated summer release Once More ‘Round The Sun. Knowing these songs had never been played in front of a crowd before was pretty rad, just another perk for opening night. There was a little technical difficulty towards the end of the set but after and impromptu bass solo that turned into a “Mastodon” chant… that turned into a jam session, we continued on!

If you missed this show I feel bad for you son, they got 99 songs and played 17 of em!!!!

Slayer!!!!! WaMu Theater, 11.01.13, Seattle, WA.

Tom Araya & Kerry King, Slayer, 11.01.13, WaMu Theater, Seattle, WA.

Friday night Slayer made it Reign in Seattle. If you missed the show, you missed one for the decibel record books. It was soooo loud in WaMu Theater I swore my lens was gonna shatter during Tom's scream from Seasons in the Abyss! His voice was stronger than Ive heard in years. For a new fan off the street it had to be glorious! Seeing Slayer for the first time, because... Slayers cool! We get it, but most of us know this band like the back of our hand.

There was a stagnant feeling in the air, a slight miss fire... in fact there was no fire, or Hanneman, or Lombardo. Last time I saw them the pyro gave me flash burn, original drummer Dave Lombardo was still swinging, and founding member and guitarist Jeff Hanneman was alive. The metal community knows the feeling all too well though. Its not the first time we've seen a guitar grace the stage without its player. And we've all looked forward to seeing one musician on stage while feeling torn because the original member is missing... no matter the circumstance. They say good things always come to an end but for Slayer, like many others, this isnt it!

Paul Bostaph is back on drums and is no stranger to the Slayer throne, having played with the band for nearly a decade in the 90s and early 2000s. Bostaph also plays in Exodus with guitarist Garly Holt who filled in for Hanneman over these past few difficult years. This Slayer sound may very well be the new norm, and it sounded fucking good! Then again how could it not! Check out this set list...

Old school, as promised, and they were feeling it! I watched the lighting tech throughout the show and he was getting down! The stage looked great, in good ol' Slayer fashion. Giant hanging metal inverted crosses moved up and down in front of three different backdrops. During the encore of Hanneman-riff-fan-favorites, "South of Heaven" and "Angel of Death", the backdrop also payed tribute... Still Reigning

Hank III and The Damn Band, Attention Deficit Domination, & The Bar Ranch!

Hanks Williams the 3rd is a force to be reckoned with, he's one of the hardest woking guys on the biz. Having seen him and his gang of outlaws on many occasions he still amazes me every time. To break it down for you... upon entering the Showbox at the Market on Tuesday night you see the posted set TIME, which simply states HANK 3 8:00-12:00 and they are not lying. Last year he at least took a ONE 5 minute break, but only on the side of the stage. This year he didn't even do that. He started at 8 o'clock on the spot and ended at midnight on the spot, but he dosn't stop there. As soon as the last song ends he sets down his guitar, turns off his gear, chugs a bottle of... you be the judge, and jumps off the stage to meet all his fans. And I do mean ALL of them.
This years Hank III show included 4 different set from 4 different music genres. Starting with the seemingly crowd favorite cuntry set from "Hank 3 and The Damn Band" Featuring way too much gear for one stage plus 6 badass musicians. Now I love me some stand up bass and Hanks got it but he seems to have a different bassist ever year and my fav hasn't donned his stage in YEARS. That being said fiddle player, David McElfresh seems to have been around for quite a few tours now and for good reason. He kills it & brings soooo much energy to the stage! Banjo player  Daniel Mason seems a bit shy and held back on stage but still plays his ass off. Unfortunately The drummers gets stuffed behind a wall of amps, and to top it off... the kits is clear acrylic and glowing green, My favorite! Last but not least Andy Gibson on the steel guitar brings a dark mysterious vibe to the stage.
The cuntry set lasts about 2 hours or half the show, being the brightest and most engaging of his sets. This time around 3 really spanned his discography from Hank Sr. covers all the way to his brand new double disc "Brothers of The 4X4". Throughout the night the music gets heavier, the lights get darker, and the crowd gets thinner... but the energy never dissipates! The musicians on the other hand do. After That Damn Band leaves the stage and a slight outfit and gear change, 3 starts in with a little Hellbilly and Punk rock from his other new record "A Fiendish Threat" to set the fucker off! Then another hat and gear change, the lights go out and AttentionDeficit Domination hit the stage with nothing but the glow of a little green light and a little doom metal. Last up for the night, the masked men of 3Bar Ranch take stage and send us home!
Not many shows start the evening with a fully packed house and get smaller and more intimate as the night goes on. So don't just take it from me, next time 3s around your town... go check it out, and be sure to stay till the end and shake the mans hand yourself. I always do! And we have a mutual respect for each other as I am always the only photographer that shoots the whole show. We thanks each other for sticking around till the bitter end! So cheers Hank, its humbling to be in your presence! until next time...

Gwar & Whitechapel, at The Showbox SoDo, October 11 2013

Its October again sooo like clockwork Gwar came ravishing through the Northwest. They always come around when the temperature drops. Just another way to torture the human race. After soaking fans with their blood, sweat, and piss  they release us out into the cold, drenched from head to toe. Brrr! I can feel the pneumonia coming on already.

Hmm a pneumonia phenomenon, could it be the Gwarpocalypse?

I knew just the alien to ask! I was all set to interview the one and only Oderus Urungus when WAH WAH WAHHHH Gwar got stuck in Canada the night before the show. I can only imagine what its like for a Gwar tour to try and get through customs... So my interview got the boot due to a backed up schedule but they still took to the stage and slayed as usual.

On the chopping block tonight was the Queen of England breasts along with the Royal Baby and and Justin Biebers teeny tiny pecker... Slaughtered to the tune of...

Despite the lack of blood shed when us photographer were shooting and the fact that I can now regrettably say Ive seen Justin Bieber live in concert... All in all Gwar are still one of the most entertaining acts you'll ever see live. But man I was really looking forward to finding out how heavy Odurus balls are and when the world is going to end. They must know, considering they did create mankind. My guess is we are all puppets on their strings. I guess when it comes down to it, I'll still head to the slave pit for refuge.

Melvins 30th Anniversary Tour

Over the weekend Seattle welcomed The Melvin's on their 30th Anniversary tour. They packed Neumo's on Capitol Hill for 2 sold out nights. Although Im sure we've all seen them before, fans still lined the street listening and hoping for a ticket. Melvin's drummer Dale Crover set the night off with his side project, Honky. Melvin's were up next and the crowd was just feet away ready to light up Buzz with cell phones in hand. Jeff Pinkus of Butthole surfers filled in for Melvin's bassist Jared Warren and Coady Willis shared drum duties with Dale. All in all Neumo's was packed, HOT, and sweaty but The Melvin's are always solid especially when they rock the dual drumming.

Gigantour 2013 featuring Megadeth, Black Label Society, HellyeaH, Newsted, and more!

Hello me its nice talking to myself... Yesterday Megadeth brought their Gigantour through Washington. The Comcast Arena in Everett was a change from the norm as far as venues go. The show kicked off early and on a tuesday afternoon. First up was old school Metallica Guitarist Jason Newsted. Back from a short hiatus from the tour due to a case of pneumonia, Newsted set the show off right. Tracks off their upcoming album "Heavy Metal Music" (Due out next week) graced the set list along with "Whiplash" for all the old Tallica' fans!

HellyeaH were up next and feeling it, they definitely had the most energy of the night. Frontman Chad Grey always delivers. Seems the older he gets the higher he jumps. Hellyeah's set both looked and sounded great... which is a lot more than I can say for Device.

Black Label Society had me entertained with their light show but they may just be because there actually was one... I just cant get over how bad Device was. I mean I didn't expect them to be good but they dropped the ball on all counts. Anyway, back to Black Label. During Zakk Wylde's guitar solos I couldn't help but wish I was watching Dime up there.

Onto Megadeth! Props to whoever designed their stage show. Ive never been much a fan of stage smoke but they did it the best I've ever seen. The smoke rolled in low across the stage as the intro played. Visually, the whole first song was like something out of a movie or music video. On the other hand the audio was a little to good to be true... Mustaine seems to be getting a little help these days but hey, at lease they're still going strong and stealing the show!

Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival 2013 Ft. Rob Zombie, Mastodon, and more!

Last week Rockstar Energy Drinks Mayhem Festival took me on a 1000 mile trip from Seattle to Napma Idaho and back for two full days of Mayhem in the Sun. 110 degree weather in a car with no AC but it was all worth it. On Day 2 in Auburn, WA I sat down with guitarists John 5 of Rob Zombie and Bill Kelliher of Mastodon. First I caught up with Ex Marilyn Manson guitarist John 5 about the heat, the tour, new music and old.

Negative1Photo- So your a couple of days into the tour. Yesterday the sun didn't even go down until after the pyro started. How are you doing today?

John 5- Im good, its a lot cooler than yesterday. I think this is perfect weather. So Its gonna be great, but oh my god it gets so hot once that fire comes.

N1 - The Rob Zombie stage show just keeps getting better and better. On this tour heres  Giant Robots and Monsters , crazy mic stands, podiums, and instruments, Bright lights and fire. Whats the creative process and who all is behind it?

J5- Uhh, Trial and error... (laughts) No, Its mostly Rob. He just has tons of ideas and we see what works. I just play guitar and stay out of the way of the fire and all that stuff. Its pretty big but its gonna be bigger tonight, cuz the stage was so small yesterday.

N1 - I was side stage yesterday watching the guys get in and out of the giant creature costumes. Thats gotta be the worst job on tour.

J5- Ya those guys have bad jobs. They're unhappy all the time. (laughs)  Hey, Its entertainment, you know were here to entertain and people want to be entertained as much as possible, so we like putting on a good show for people. You know to see their faces and reaction is really cool.

N1- You guys have a new album out now called "Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor".

J5- Ya, Its doing really well, were really happy, and Its great to play songs from that album live. Its a lot of fun. Its going really well, I love doing the new songs on the tour because we have been doing the other songs for so long, so its really good for us.

N1- Now you guys got Ginger (fish, ex-manson drummer) in the line up now. How did that come about?

J5- I check in with the guys every once in a while and I talked to Ginger and I said "Hey whats going on?" He's like "Oh you know this and that" and he was kinda bumming out a little bit, and this was right after we finished with Joey from Slipknot, he was playing for us, and he went back to Slipknot. So we didn't really have a drummer. So I talked to Rob and he was like ya lets get Ginger down here and see how he does. So, its good cuz Ive known Ginger forever. You know he's a total nut job but its its good. (laughs)

N1- Do you miss any of the other guys from Manson? Did you have a particulary strong musical connection with any of them?

J5- Well I talk to them so its good. Its like seeing old friends that you used to live with. I talk to them every once in a while and we just did a tour with them so everyones doing well.

N1- Do you jam with any of them ever ?

J5- Just Ginger.

N1- You've been all over the place in your career. Working with some of the heaviest hitters around from Rob Zombie to Rob Halford, Marilyn Manson and David Lee Roth just to name a few. How are you going to keep topping yourself?

J5- I dont know I just wrote a song for Rod Stewart. It was the #1 record in the UK. and its doing really well. Thats really cool. So I'm psyched, Im just happy, and I don't take it for granted. Im just really thankful for everything thats been going on.

N1- Thats one of the things I love about you, you just seem so humble, you love what you do, you love the fans and giving back.

J5- Ya oh and thats so important to me, you know because thats how I always look at it, how when I was a kid thats what I liked. I liked meeting the musicians and getting them to talk to me bout guitar players, guitar playing, and styles, or whatever, you know whatever they liked to talk about. So I try to do that as much as possible. It made me happy as a kid, so its hopefully gonna make them happy, me doing it for them.

N1- I noticed you started putting up picture of fan artwork, tattoos, letters and things like that online.

J5- Ya its cool that they take the time to do that and I appreciate it. I thinks its great. I used to do that that, like draw Ace Frehley or something like. Its just cuz thats whats in your head and I really appreciate that!

N1- You do touring, studio work, and solo stuff. Whats your favorite?

J5- You know once your on tour for a long time you wanna go record and once your recording for too long you wanna go tour, so its kinda the best of both worlds. Just like if you get tired of eating pizza all the time, your gonna want something else. Now that taste really good! It just comes and goes.

N1- Its fortunate you dont hate touring because there are some people out there that are really not into it but its part of there job.

J5- Ya its really difficult for some of the bands but luckily its pretty great. I pretty much do exactly what I do at home except for go onstage. Ill just sit on the bus, watch TV, and play guitar. So at home Ill sit on the couch and play guitar. Its kinda the same thing, you know?

N1- So what led you to pursue your solo career?

J5- I got a chance to play with the legendary Les Paul, who I loved, and I got a chance to get up on stage with him and play and he said "Ive seen a lot of guitar players and you impressed me." and it was really cool and he really pushed me in the direction to do my instrumental stuff. It was great. Im mean, Its amazing!

N1- And now you have 6 solo albums.

J5- Ya alot of studio records, and more to come. I was just working on one right before I came out here. So, ya more to come, Im always working.

N1- Rob has something up his sleeve this halloween called The Great American Nightmare.

J5- Ya Great American Nightmare. It's gonna be all month long but were just playing on Nov. 2nd. Universal has like an all month long halloween thing and its like that. Its gonna be crazy tho, its gonna be so different, the mazes are gonna be frightening. Rob was telling me about some and its gonna be nuts, totally nuts! So its gonna be fun, its gonna be a lot of fun. Were psyched!

N1- Very cool, When do you get a little break and get back home to the family?

J5- I think August 10th or 11th and then we go do Rock in Rio in September. So it will be fun.

N1- How is it these days with all the social media. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc. People knowing more of your personal life than they used to?

J5- You know I remember I loved Kiss and Van Halen and I remember racing to the magazine store across from school and looking to see whats going on and it was like that. That was the only way you could do it but now you can see what I was doing in the hotel a couple of hours ago. Its kinda good and bad so you gotta do it. I dont think you can fight the system cuz your gonna lose but you just have to do it, its just part of the deal now.

---------------------------------------------

Negative1photo- Hows the tour been treating you so far?

Bill Kelliher- Fucking Hot! Yesterday was 110 degrees, literally like baking, it was brutal, disgustingly hot. Its nice here, a little cooler, a little breeze. We were like facing the sun as were playing, it was ridiculous.

N1- Mastodon are know to have very unique album art. How does that all come together and what can we expect for the next record?

BK-We were using a guy named Paul Romano for many years. Our record company (Relapse) was out of the Philly area, and he's from Philly. He worked at the Mutter Museum, which is like human oddities. So we met him and he was really interesting. Wed always stay with him at his house and we started throwing ideas around with him because he's an amazing artist. He takes a really long time tho (laughs). He kinda shuts the door, goes in his room, and turns off his phone and computer and doesn't talk to anybody until its finished. So with The Hunter record, it came together so quickly we didn't want to be waiting on Paul. We kinda wanted to branch off. The record was a little different. I mean all our records are a little different but that ones really different so we went with AJ Fosik. Brann scours the internet looking for different crazy art, for different people to do it. He's really good about all that stuff. He though Aj Fosik had some really cool stuff that would represent us really well, and it does, its really cool.

N1- It was amazing how you guys documented the process of the sculpture with the Black Tongue video as well.

BK- We own that piece, its at our practice space. Its incredible up close.

N1- So do you guys fight over it?

BK- Well, you know, I take it on weekends and Brann gets it on Wednesdays and Brent and Troy get it on Thursdays and Mondays (laughs). Ya I don't know it just sits at the space. We need to build a little platform for it. It came in this huge, huge box. Its incredibly big!

N1- What about the next album?

BK- I dont know, Im not really sure what were gonna pick for the next album cover. I have no idea what were gonna get into. We've got some ideas floating around tho.

N1- Theres almost a sense of split personality when it comes to Mastodon. On one hand you seem to take your work and music very seriously yet you guys have so much fun with you concepts, videos, and interviews.

BK- Oh yeah, you have to have a sense of humor. You cant take yourself too seriously.

N1- Like in the "Curl of the Burl" video... snorting wood to get high. Who's idea was that?

BK- (Laughing) Im not really sure. Probably Branns. He comes up with a lot of the aesthetics for the band.

N1- You can tell you guys are really tight knit and to see such talent not taking themselves too seriously is very refreshing.

BK- Were serious on stage but off stage were very goofy. We just like to tell jokes and pull pranks and do stupid shit and laugh about it.

N1- Do you enjoy being on tour for the most part?

BK- Ya, its kinda tough being away from home, my kids, and wife, my own bed. But this is my job and you have to get out there and earn some money. We were off for seven months. Its a long time for somebody to be out of work. This tour is kind of easy tho because were doing a lot of flying. Like tonight, were not gonna drive on the bus for two days to Arizona, were gonna fly there tomorrow morning. Then Ill be in Rochester next week and Ill see my mom, my brother, my family, and then a week later, I think Im going to Denver to meet my wife and then her and I are going to fly to Atlanta for two days off. Then Ill fly to Toronto, Play the show there and like a week later we roll through Atlanta to play. So its like every week Ill be able to see her. It will be nice! Theres a lot of good breaks in it so its not too bad.

N1- How old are your kids?

BK- Harrison is almost 9 and Conan is gonna be 7. They're really fun at this age. They're so into everything. They love fishing and my older son is doing soccer camp right now in New York. So Ill get to see them in a couple of days. we go through Pittsburgh and I get to see my sister-in law. So its like everyday you get to see somebody you haven't seen in a while. Thats the best part about touring. I like seeing old friends and reconnecting with people. Its always nice and this tour is pretty well laid out. You have good catering, and every thing is set up everyday. We play at the exact some time. Its just like going to a job. Its like... ok, you get onto the bus at this time, you wake up, your here, you do the meet and greet, you do a couple of interviews, you play the gig at 7, and then your don't for the rest of the night. You have dinner and onto the next place.

N1- So wat your saying is you don't miss the days of the "Fart Box", 4 guys crammed into an old Chevy Van, playing in front of 20 people.

BK- Ya, I don't miss those days no. I don't know how we lived and did that. We used to party and drink so much and be so hung over. Wed be loading all our stuff and driving to the gig that was 9 hours away THAT DAY! I don't know how we didn't just burn out. We were just living by the seat of our pants for so many years. Now we've got a tour bus, its nice! Even if we were still doing that id probably still be doing it because I love playing music and guitars are my life.

N1- So you guys have a new record coming here pretty soon.

BK- Ya we've got about 25, 30 songs ready to roll. Were getting ready to record those when we get off this tour. Its gonna be great!

N1- I noticed Brent has been messing around with some Lap Steels and thing of that sort. You guys are know to mix in weird instruments like the Moogerfooger and now maybe the Lap Steel when recording. Is that something we can expect to hear on the new record?

BK- I dont know, he plays it a lot at the practice pad so Im sure it will make it on there.

N1- Thats one thing I can say about you band is there has never been a regurgitation of the same record.

BK- Ya, you cant keep writing the same record. You gotta make it fresh and new and exciting.

N1- So what the new one gonna be like?

BK- I dont know, Im not really sure yet. I haven't heard the vocals or lyrics yet, but I've heard some ideas that we've been throwing around and it sounds really proggy but theres a lot of rock. Somebody told me when they heard the riff I wrote, they were like "Man it sounds like the Scorpions meets Slayer or something" and I was "Oh thats cool, I like the Scorpions and Slayer" You know were trying to just evolve even more, just get more melody in there and not make things too complex like we used to. We used to sit there and over analyze ever riff. Wed be like, Its not heavy enough, or its not crazy enough, or its not noodly enough. Its like, its ok to just lay back like the Curl of the Burl song. If we want to feel like writing a song like that we should be able to.

N1- Definitely!

MIndless Self Indulgence, 04.30.13, Showbox at the Market, Seattle, WA.

If you ever wanted to pay a band you love hard earned money to hate on you at their show, last night was your chance. Don't worry though Mindless Self Indulgence will be back because deep down they really do love you! At one point Front man, Jimmy Urine, drops his drawers to show the fans his new $200,000 underwear he bought with the kick-starter money for their new record. He also requested the show be know as a Taylor Swift concert as he doesn't want to be held responsible or our bad decisions and asked everyone to leave on multiple occasions. No one did tho, in fact the crowd was so into it I though the floor was gonna fall out from underneath us.

Metal Alliance Tour with Anthrax, Exodus, High on Fire, and Municipal Waste 03.31.13, Showbox SoDo, Seattle, WA.

The Metal Alliance Tour rolled through Seattle this past weekend. It was an early show on an Easter Sunday but fans came out in full force and stayed until the last note... And why wouldn't they ITS FUCKING ANTHRAX, and they played Among the Living in its entirety. They also played TNT by AC/DC and some other covers, or "Anthems" as Scott Ian put it, off their new record Worship Music. Guitarist Jon Donais joined the Thrax boys for this tour and I don't think they could have found a better fit. Easter will never be the same again!

Lamb of God, Hellyeah, and In Flames Dec 16th 2012. Showbox SoDo, Seattle, WA.

This show was originally set for early this summer with Dethklok and it was to be the first show of the tour. But as Im sure most of you are aware Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe was imprisoned in the Czech Republic on charges of manslaughter during that time. Randy was released and tours were rescheduled. Now were the last night of the tour and LOG are joined by In Flames, Hellyeah, and Sylosis. I don't think Ive ever seen so much energy in a crowd at Showbox SoDo as I did at this show. The circle pit at the end was so massive and strong that it took out all 4 bands merch tables. One of which I was standing on. Id say we sent them home properly!

Melvins Lite, Big Business, and Federation X at the Showbox at the Market in Seattle!

Friday night brought Melvins Lite to the stage of the Showbox at the Market. Buzz rocked his usual Whiteboy afro and robe on stage to a packed house. Dale Croverwas flying solo on the skins this round alongside Stand-up bassist Trevor Dunn who was honestly a show stealer! I admire the relationship these musicians have with their instruments. The energy in the music never fails. The night was seamless from beginning to end. Each bands sound was consistent with the next and not in a bad way.

Incubus an Linkin Park rock the Dome on the Honda Civic Tour!

It had been far too long since I had seen incubus live and I almost missed it. Last week was exceptionally crazy for me as the summer concert season came mostly to an end. I was still stuck in Seattle/Tacoma traffic as MUTEMATH took the stage which bummed me out because I hear they are out of this world live! Fortunately I got to the Dome just in time for Incubus to hit the stage and this was my very first capture of the night and definitely one of my favorites of the week. Oh and wouldn't you know it... Its a bassist! Ben Kenney has been rockin' with Incubus for years now and while I do miss Mr. Dirk Lance I enjoy the energy and style that Kenney brings to the stage.

Ben Kenney, Incubus, Tacoma Dome, Sept. 5, 2012, Seattle, WA.

Incubus front man Brandon Boyd seemed a little off tonight but later explained to the crowd that he had been feeling a bit under the weather the past few dates. Fortunately for Boyd the Honda Civic Tour was coming to a close. I wish you a quick recovery and some much deserved time off.

At one point during their set Einziger brought out a piano and some wine glasses. With his guitar hanging around his torso he pour two glasses of wine and made a toast to his frontman. They drank and went right into "Hello" with Einziger on the keys!

Linkin Park closed out the night with a super long intro. This Honda Civic Tour is a huge production. You know its gonna be a good show when the backstage parking lot is over flowing with tour busses and semi trucks. Not to mention its a co-headlining tour. Anyway, Linkin Park also opened for themselves... on the big screen. In between bands, the crowd sat through what I would describe as, Honda Civic commercials featuring Linkin Park! Woohoo! Now dont get me wrong I like the behind the scenes footage as much as the the next music fan and Ill give props to anyone who can put a successful tour like this on the road but this seemed a bit much and uber cheesy! Oh well the boys all rocked it and the fans got what they wanted. Everyone goes home happy!

Chester Bennington, Linkin Park, Tacoma Dome, Sept. 5, 2012, Seattle, WA.

I love it when a band play a long set! It was very surprising to me that the bands played as long as they did.

BEWARE! YOU ARE ABOUT TO ENTER THE WORLD OF KNOTFEST... THE 1ST EVER KNOTFEST... THROUGH MY BRAND NEW EYES!

First of all, NO! ... and then ...

... we wait ...

Where do I even begin? This past week has been quite the whirl wind. I guess we should begin at the beginning... but Im not quite prepared to venture that far back, although it might fun. For me the beginning was at the ripe young age of 12 years old.

Joey Jordison 1, Slipknot, Mid America Motorplex, Pacific Junction, Iowa

Its been a slipknot kind of summer. It started with a little show from The Miami Vice Sound Crack (TMVSC) Tour featuring The Filth Epitome Number 0, Mr. Sid Wilson, DJ from Slipknot along with MCs The Keen One and Jamazz the Rebel Alien. I have yet to blog about this show because, well these things take time... and the lighting at studio seven needs a little lovin. Next up was a two day spree of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival that Slipknot headlined along with the greats in Slayer, Motorhead, Anthrax, and TMVSC just to name a few.

Jim Root 4, Slipknot, Day 1, Mid America Motorplex, Pacific Junction, Iowa

I was excited to see this face again. During this summers concert season there have been a lot of missing band members. Jimmy here missed the first half...ish of the Mayhem festival due to a ruptured spleen. Glad to see him back on stage and doing well!

Unfortunately even with Jim back, slipknot will forever be without Paul Gray number 2, founding member and bassist for Slipknot. Paul will always be a huge part of this band and everthing that goes into it and that was definitely apparent during the inaugural Knotfest. He is greatly missed by all who knew and loved him, family, friends, band members, and fans. This weekend his name, number, and face were plastered across the mid-west, on bodies, shirts, posters, artwork, and even slipknots' final backdrop. In Iowa Pauls' parents came and showed their support for their son and his band. I had noticed them getting escorted through the photo pit before Slipknot took the stage. They were both wearing Slipknot hoodies. On the back of one was the lyrics "We wont die!" I love it! These kinds of things make me proud to be part of this family.

Sid Wilson 0, DJ, Slipkot and Paul Grays' parents, Mid America Motorplex, Pacific Junction, Iowa

A very emotional moment before the embrace between Sid and Pauls' mother, as Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor takes a break to honor his fallen brother. He talks to the crowd about why we are all there... because of Paul. At this time Taylor talks about how important it is to the band that Pauls' family is there and has always been there for them. Earlier in the set percussionist Chris Fehn number 3 also came out to the sound stage to greet the family.

I guess Sid figures while he's out there he might as well climb the sound stage and take a dive!

Sid Wilson 0, Slipknot, Day 1, Mid America Motorplex, Pacific Junction, Iowa

The Great Big Mouth, Corey Taylor 8, Slipknot, Day 1, Mid America Motorplex, Pacific Junction, Iowa

Chris Fehn 3, Slipknot, Day 1, Mid America Motorplex, Pacific Junction, Iowa

The road to Knotfest was a long and uncertain journey. As I waited for my approval email to shoot the festival I struggled on if I should make the trip or not. The turning point for me was when Randy Blythe, singer of Lamb of God, was released from a Czech Republic prison. Blythe was being held prisoner for over a month on a manslaughter charge. Prior to Blythe's release on August 2nd Lamb of God had been pulled from the Knotfest line up. Once they were back on I was going... no matter what. I wasnt going to miss their first show back! So I was headed across the country, to where it all began... IOWA!

Lamb of God. Pre-show calm before the storm... Literally! Day 1, Mid America Motorplex, Pacific Junction, Iowa

Lamb headlined second stage. Machine Head played right before them and blew the power. This was one of the many shots I took of the stage while waiting for it to kick back in. We really were in the middle of fucking no where. Corn Fields, Iowa. As I waited in anticipation for the boys to hit the stage, I could only imagine what Randy was going through.

30 grueling minutes after Lamb of Gods set was supposed to start, the power came back on and they took the stage with a vengeance! ... and the lighting on this particular night was amazing. Thank you lighting guy, you are my favorite!

Randy Blythe, Lamb of God, Mid America Motorplex, Pacific Junction, Iowa

Randy talks a lot between songs and its always interesting to hear what the man has to say, as he is very intelligent and well spoken. On this day he talks about hows he's "been away for a while" and how he "couldnt be happier to be surrounded by cornfields in the middle of Iowa". He talks about how glad he is to be free, back in the states, and back on stage.

Randy talks to the crowd about how thankful he is to everyone who supported him during is incarceration and to everyone who came out to see them at knotfest. He says he got a call from his manager, Larry Mazer, while at the Prague airport before he flew home. Larry tells him that the Dethklok tour was canceled but he had to ask... "Do you still want to play Knotfest?" and randy says "Fuck yes I want to play!' ...... so there you have it!

Chris Adler, Wille Adler, & Mark Morton, Lamb of God, Day 1, Mid America Motorplex, Pacific Junction, Iowa

During Day 2 of Knotfest the storm rolled in and It poured for the whole Lamb of God set. Randy thanks the crowd for sticking it out during the rain. He also comments about the metal community in general and asks the crowd, "Do you think Nicki Minaj (or someone like that) fans would be out here in the rain?" "Fuck no they would be at home watching America Idol or some shit!"

Randy Blythe, Lamb of God, Day 2, Somerset Amphitheater, Somerset, Wisconsin

For me it was an awesome shooting experience. We (the press) got the boot after just two songs, when we usually get three. I can understand though since a lot of the photographers were just hovering around protecting their cameras. My camera DOES NOT CARE... it is a dare devil, it likes to shoot GWAR, and go to the beach, and we would have shot the whole set in the rain if allowed! Cheers to these guys!

Willie Adler, Me, Randy Blythe, & Mark Morton of Lamb of God, Day 2, Somerset Amphitheater, Somerset, Wisconsin

Check out the badass rug!

Lamb of God, Day 2, Somerset Amphitheater, Somerset, Wisconsin

Oh Deftones how I love thee...

Abe Cunningham, Deftones, Day 1, Mid America Motorplex, Pacific Junction, Iowa

Day one, Deftones hit the stage and they have so much energy! Frontman Chino Moreno cracks my shit up! The man loves the sound of his mic hitting the ground. Just a few songs into their set it stops working... he's trying to talk into it when a stage hand gives him a new one. With the old mic in one hand he says, "I think this mic is broken" and slams it onto the stage. "I don't know why... i cant imaging how it could have broke!"

Chino Moreno, Deftones, Day 2, Somerset Amphitheater, Somerset, Wisconsin

Chino Moreno (Under Knotfest Banner) day 1, & Stephen Carpender day 2, Deftones, Iowa/Wisconsin

It's a sad day for my Deftones family also, as another tour goes by without Bassist Chi Cheng. Chi was in a car accident in late 2008 and is still recovering with the support of family, friends, and fans alike. He too is in our hearts and minds during his road to recovery. For more information on Chis' condition visit ONELOVEFORCHI.COM

Serjio Vega has been with the band since the accident and is throwin down the bass lines and keeping the energy up! Vega is a great addition and has Chis' blessing since he filled in for him prior to the 2008 accident. The energy between Chino and Vega is awesome! At one point Chino looks out over the crowd at the knotfest carnival rides and says, "Man I want to be on that Hammer. Hey Vega, wanna go on the Hammer with me? What do you think, like 10-20 minutes after? Alright we will meet you guys (talking to crowd) over there like 20 minutes after were done here and we will all ride the Hammer"

Abe Cunningham, China Moreno, & Sergio Vega, Deftones, Day 2, Somerset Amphitheater, Somerset, Wisconsin

Sids DJ stage was set up right by the Slipknot museum both days. (By the way I will be doing a totally seprate blog on the museum because as you can see I already have way to much footage of even just the performances.)

I really love this shot because of the "Purgatory Mask" or "Death Mask" from the All Hope is Gone era in the background. The Giant masks were also featured in the Psychosocial video.

Dj Starscream aka Sid Wilson 0, Slipknot/TMVSC, Day 1, Mid America Motorplex, Pacific Junction, Iowa

The sky and clouds were gorgeous for day 2 of Knotfest as the storm slowly rolled in. This was the best day yet of the summer for shooting TMVSC. The "stage" was set up on two huge tires which made it kind of unstable AND bouncy! RAD!

Jamazz, Starscream, & TheKeenOne, The Miami Vice Sound Crack, Day 2, Somerset Amphitheater, Somerset, Wisconsin

Bouncy!

Sid Wilson & Keen Killin it! 2/3rds of TMVSC, Day 2, Somerset Amphitheater, Somerset, Wisconsin

Sid Jacked Keens water and took a drink on stage. He says, "I took someones water, I don't knows who's it was but its mine now." "It's who's?" Keen says. Sid shakes his head and walks to the front of the stage to do push ups. He says "We have this game. Theres no selfishness, everything is everyones... I said the 'M' word."

THE SUN BEAT DOWN ON THE BIRD MAN AND FAMILY AT THE SEATTLE STOP OF THE LEFT COAST TOUR AS THEY THREW DOWN YESTERDAY AT JEFFERSON SKATEPARK!

It was extreamly hot at the Left Coast Tour Demo yesterday on Beacon Hill and I was loving it. The skaters were killing it and the fans were in awe. I managed to snake my way through the crowd into a prime shooting spot and grab some nice shots. Check it!

DAY THREE STOPS IN SEATTLE, WA! AND DAY 4 IN NAMPA, ID!

From the moment the doors opened the crowd was going wild. Madness started to run through my veins as I set my body on auto pilot. Three stages running in perfect time. Once a band played their last note on one stage another band started up on another stage. Running from stage to stage, and from state to state, I managed to capture some great moments.

This tour brought mixed emotions for me. Slipknot, Slayer, and Anthrax were all missing members, yet they still pushed forward. I also ran into miss Rita Haney, Dimebag Darrells long-time love. She and I had a good heart to heart about our fallen brother and the aftermath of all that came with it. I can only hope that things will get better in the future. She and the great Chad Lee (one of Dimes photographers) were rocking the Dimebag Hardwear tent.  We all need to raise a glass to these people for persevering. Getcha pull!

Slipknot not only lost their bassist Paul Grey (#2) just 2 years ago (RIP #2) but just weeks before Mayhem hit the road Guitarist Jim Root (#4) burst his appendix. 2 men down and still going strong. This is FAMILY. I wish Jim a quick recovery.

Chris Fehn 3, Slipknot, Idaho Center Amphitheatre, Nampa, ID. 2012

The reason I say I have mixed emotions is because these people are like family to me. Ive know the Slipknot guys since I was 13 years old. Watching The 9 onstage as a 7 piece was tough. Especially since Paul and Jim shared the same area on stage and these nights it seemed pretty empty. DJ Sid Wilson (#0) as a special way of cheering me up... The guys keep Pauls bass on stage and every chance Sid got he was showing it love. Dancing and moshing it up next to the bass just like when Paul was on stage with them.

Sid Wilosn 0, Slipknot, Idaho Center Amphitheatre, Nampa, ID. 2012

Showin' me some love!

Sid is aso forming a new family which I had the pleasure of meeting a few weeks prior to mayhem. KEENxSID is Sids new DJ side project with LA based MC, THEKEENONE. They have been touring in support of their record Repeat. On the Mayhem Tour Sid is throwing down DJ sets in between bands at the Jagger tent and also has his own stage that he spins at out of the back of his Killa Clothing Trailer. And yes he also has a clothing line called Killa Clothing! This kid is a maniac. Please check out Repeat, give it a chance. You will love it. I certainly do.

Slayer was up right before Slipknot and they were a man down also. Guitarist Jeff Hanneman has been under going surgeries, skin grafts, and intense rehab since a spider bite more than a year ago left him with necrotizing fasciitis. Filling in for Hanneman is Exodus guitarist Gary Holt. If you have ever seen Slayer before you know what they are capable of and Mayhem was no exception. In Seattle the boys Dawned a plain black backdrop but that wasn't all. Pyro for days, the huge metal pentagram logo, and massive inverted crosses made of Marshal amps. AMAZING!

I FUCKING LOVE ANTHRAX!

So much energy from these guys. Unfortunately after the first three songs that I shot I had to run to chat with the boys from Whitechapel. I was bummed that I didn't get to watch the whole set but they left me with a high that lasted for days!

The Mighty Mastodon, Opeth, and Ghost packed the Showbox SoDo.... with Beards!

I CAME FOR MASTODON! These guys just never stop. Ive seen them soooo many time now and they always bring it! Mastodon and Opeth are both supporting new records making The Heritage Hunter a duel headlining tour, so the boys trade off closing the show. I love it when bands do this because it makes for a bigger and more energized show throughout that more people can enjoy. On this stop in Seattle Opeth closed the night with (from what I saw) a solid set. For me this was perfect, making for a metal show sandwich with Hooverville Bread! My friends and I started and ended the night with a few beers across the street at Hooverville.

Now back to Mastodon. Last time I saw them (a whole 6ish months ago) was probably my favorite time Ive ever seen them. So they had some big shoes to fill this stop! Now don't get me wrong The Hunter and Crack the Skye are big game changers for the band and I do really love these records... But after 3 years of the set list consisting of Crack the Skye front to back and only one song off each off their other albums I was so hyped to hear them shred through their whole catalog. Monday night however wasn't quite as versatile but it still killed as always. The mostly stuck to The Hunter and CTS. These albums are a little less heavy than previous albums but where they tone it down in one area they take it up a notch in another. Never missing a beat! While I love everything Mastodon has done to date, the high points for me were the old cuts... Crystal Skull, Aqua Dementia, and Blood and Thunder! Which they respectfully stuck in the beginning and end of their set as to start and end on a high note! I LOVE IT!

Troy Sanders, Badass... I mean bassist, Mastodon! (also, check out the pink lasers Drummer Brann Dailor is spewing onto the stage! He knows whats up.)

Did I mention I love Beards! I was walking around all night like Night at the Roxbury all like Beard...Beard...Beard...Beard..BeBeardBeard...BBBearddd! Troys takes the cake though, Plus I have a thing for bassists!

The one and Only Brent Hinds, Guitarist, Mastodon.

Bill Kelliher, Guitarist, The Mighty Mastodon.

Brent Hinds, Red Beard, Shark Tooth, Mastodon, Creature!

Up next... Opeth!

Martin "Axe" Axenrot, Drummers, Opeth.

Mikael Akerfeldt, Lead Vocals, Guitarist, Opeth.

Mikael Akerfeldt, Feet, Lead Vocals, Guitarist, Opeth.

Fredrik Akesson, Guitarist, Opeth.

Martin Mendez, Bassist, Opeth.

Ghost opened the show and having no idea what I was in for it was a delightful visual treat for myself and my camera. I love creepy awesomeness!

Devil Driver and The Metal Alliance tour hit Seattle with a vengance at Studio 7!

Sometimes you have to shoot a show without a photo pit. Sometimes youre shooting a show lit only by red and orange lights... if any at all. Sometimes, like last night at The Metal Alliance Tour, your shooting both. Luckily for me I LOVE me some Devil Driver, and last night a Studio 7 they Killed it! Shreading through every album seemlessly to a sold out crowd. There was so much energy being transfered between the bands and the crowd that by the time Devil Driver hit the stage nothing else even mattered!

I did end up with a few decent shots. Even shooting with a 1.8 prime at iso 6400 I struggled. Thanks to Jeff for getting all up in my lens! I probly spent 50% of the time photographing the DD cross on the neck of his guitar as he played. This made for some really fun images! Check it!

Last words... as my brother and sister head back to my hometown I wish I was going with them cuz Devil Driver and the rest of the gang will be playing Spokane tomorrow night. Although I dont know if my sore throat would appreciate it, if I could Id be there screaming every word just like last night...just like every night! Dont miss it! You never know what show will be your last!

Mindless Self Indulgence and Hyro Da Hero rape Seattles Showbox SoDo!

MSI... What else can I say. They always bring the pain and put on a killer show. The nice surprise this time around was an equally entertaining opening act... Hyro Da Hero. That is at least for me. Theres nothing better than photographing a band with unlimited energy. I think Hyro spent more time in the air than on the Ground. That man can jump and their music was sick too. Check it!
